Orchard Project

Orchards were once an important part of the Cheshire landscape. Fruit was grown on farms, on country estates and in cottage gardens, producing a wide range of fruit. Each area of the county had its own speciality and distinctive varieties of fruit.

Cheshire Orchard Project In recent times the number and variety of orchards in Cheshire has declined. This is due to many factors including the intensification of agriculture, increased imports of foreign fruit, and the commercialisation of British fruit farming. However, the loss is far greater than fruit growing. Along with the trees have gone the traditional crafts, the wildlife havens, a significant landscape feature and a valued resource.
